Testosterone and Growth During Puberty

Testosterone plays a key role in pubertal growth in both males and females. During adolescence, increased testosterone levels contribute to the development of secondary sexual characteristics, such as muscle growth, deepening of the voice, and growth spurts. Here’s how it works:

  • Growth Plates: During puberty, growth plates (epiphyseal plates) in long bones are still open. Testosterone stimulates the growth plates to promote bone lengthening, which results in increased height.
  • Sexual Maturation: Testosterone triggers the onset of puberty in males, leading to an increase in height during this developmental phase. It is responsible for the pubertal growth spurt, typically occurring between the ages of 12 and 16.

Closure of Growth Plates

As puberty progresses, the growth plates in the bones gradually close. This is where testosterone has its biggest limitation when it comes to height: once the growth plates close, usually in the late teens or early twenties, further bone growth becomes impossible, and therefore height cannot increase. This closure is partly regulated by testosterone, along with estrogen in both genders.

  • In males, testosterone eventually converts to estrogen, which is what triggers the closure of growth plates.
  • After this closure, no natural method, including testosterone therapy, can make bones grow longer.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) and Height in Adults

In adults, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is used to restore normal testosterone levels, especially in those who are deficient or hypogonadal. While TRT can help with muscle mass, energy, mood, and bone density, it does not affect height once growth plates have closed.

  • Bone Density: TRT can improve bone density and prevent bone loss, which is beneficial for overall skeletal health, especially in older men, but it will not make you taller.

Other Factors That Affect Height

While testosterone influences growth during puberty, genetics is the primary determinant of height. Other factors that can influence growth include:

  • Nutrition: Adequate intake of nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and protein is essential for optimal bone growth.
  • Physical Activity: Weight-bearing exercises can improve bone health and development.
  • Sleep: Proper rest is necessary, especially for children and teenagers, as growth hormones are secreted during deep sleep.

Testosterone can contribute to height increase during puberty by promoting growth plate activity, but once the growth plates close after puberty, testosterone cannot increase your height further. If you are beyond the age when your growth plates have closed, you cannot grow taller, regardless of testosterone levels. If you’re still in your growth years, proper nutrition, sleep, and physical activity, along with natural hormonal changes, will have a much more significant impact on height.
